Keratin, smoothening, rebonding or botox for Kochi humidity

Walk out of an air-conditioned office in Kakkanad and Kochi's air gets to work on your hair within minutes. Keratin, smoothening, rebonding and hair botox all promise to fix the frizz, and the names often get used as if they meant the same thing.
They don't. Each one changes your hair to a different degree and lasts a different length of time. Here's how to tell them apart, what they cost at Toni&Guy Essensuals Infopark, and how to choose.
Why Kochi's humidity causes frizz
Hair soaks up moisture from the air. When it's dry, porous or naturally wavy, it absorbs that moisture unevenly: the outer cuticle lifts, strands swell and twist, and the smooth blow-dry you left home with turns fuzzy.
In Kochi the air stays humid for most of the year, not just during the monsoon. That's why a treatment that seals the cuticle, or changes how the hair sits, usually does more than any serum can.
The four treatments, in plain words
Rebonding
The most dramatic option. Rebonding restructures the hair's internal bonds and sets them straight with heat. It gives the straightest result, and on the hair that's been treated it lasts until that hair grows out. The trade-off is commitment: new growth comes in with your natural texture, so the roots need retouching over time.
Smoothening
Noticeably straighter and smoother, but softer and more natural-looking than rebonding. It typically lasts four to six months. A good middle ground if you want to stop blow-drying every morning without going poker-straight.
Keratin
Keratin's main job is removing frizz. Hair stays soft and keeps some movement and volume, so wavy hair still looks like your hair, just calmer. It typically lasts three to five months.
Hair botox
Despite the name, it's a deep-conditioning treatment rather than a straightener. It leaves hair softer and shinier with the least straightening of the four. That makes it a good fit if you like your texture but your lengths feel dry and rough, often after colour. There's more on the hair botox page.
Side by side
| Treatment | How straight | Typically lasts | Suits you if... |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rebonding | Straightest | Until the treated hair grows out | You want sleek, straight hair every day |
| Smoothening | Noticeably straighter | 4–6 months | You want less styling time, but softer than rebonding |
| Keratin | Frizz-free, movement kept | 3–5 months | You like your shape but hate the frizz |
| Hair botox | Least straightening | Usually the shortest of the four | Your hair is dry, dull or rough after colour |
What it costs at Essensuals Infopark
The rate card prices straightening, smoothening, rebonding, keratin and botox on one scale, by length. These are starting prices, before GST:
| Length | From |
|---|---|
| Fringe | ₹2,000 |
| Crown area | ₹3,500 |
| Up to neck | ₹5,000 |
| Shoulder length | ₹8,000 |
| Below shoulder | ₹9,000 |
| Up to waist | ₹12,000 |
Your stylist confirms the final price at the consultation, once they've seen your hair's length and density. Plan for two to five hours in the chair, depending on the treatment and how thick your hair is. Full details are on the keratin and smoothening page and the price list.
If you're likely to repeat a treatment, look at the one-year value cards on the offers page. The premium cards cover keratin, botox and HydraFacial: pay ₹15,999 for ₹20,000 of services, up to ₹39,999 for ₹52,000.
How to choose
- Wavy or curly, and you want to keep it: keratin or hair botox.
- You want straight hair with minimal effort: smoothening. For pin-straight, rebonding.
- Coloured, dry lengths: hair botox, or a course of SP Alchemy treatments from the hair spa menu. The keratin and frizz-ease options run as four sittings two weeks apart, from ₹1,500 per treatment for women and ₹1,200 for men.
- Not ready to commit: try a temporary finish first. Ironing is ₹800 for shoulder-length hair and a straight blow-dry is ₹700; see blow-dry and styling.
- Big event coming up: have the treatment one to two weeks before, never the day before, so it has time to settle.
If you colour your hair too
Colour is usually done first. Your stylist will plan the order and the gap between the two so one doesn't undo the other. If you're considering both, mention it when you book your hair colour appointment.
Pregnant, or have a sensitive scalp?
Tell the salon when you book. Your stylist can explain what's in the product and suggest whether to wait or choose a gentler option. It's always reasonable to ask what's in a straightening product before it goes on your hair. If your scalp is broken or inflamed, or you're being treated for a condition such as psoriasis, check with a dermatologist first.
Making it last through the monsoon
The first few days matter most:
- For the first 72 hours, don't wash, tie or tuck your hair behind your ears unless your stylist says otherwise.
- Switch to a sulphate-free shampoo. Sulphates strip the treatment faster.
- Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to cut friction.
- Keep the lengths conditioned and use a heat protectant. Healthy hair holds the result longer.
A few habits help in Kochi in particular. Dry your hair fully before you tie it up or put on a helmet, and try not to sleep on it wet. A hair spa every three to four weeks suits most people and keeps treated lengths soft between appointments.
Quick answers
Which one lasts the longest?
Rebonding: on the treated hair, it lasts until that hair grows out. Smoothening typically lasts four to six months and keratin three to five.
Does hair botox straighten hair?
Only slightly. It's a deep-conditioning treatment for softness and shine, so choose it for condition rather than straightness.
How much is keratin for shoulder-length hair?
From ₹8,000 at shoulder length, ₹9,000 below the shoulder and ₹12,000 to the waist. The exact price is confirmed once your stylist has seen your hair.
How long does the appointment take?
Plan for two to five hours, depending on the treatment, your hair's length and its thickness.
